The Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, the pioneer of such institutes on the African continent, was established by an Act of the Senate of the University of Ibadan in July 1962. Conceived as an interdisciplinary research institute, its mandate is to build a body of knowledge and construct an attitude of intellection that will not take for granted the heritage of African peoples, their experiences in the present, and their aspirations for the future.
