1962
Establishment of the Institute
Established by an Act of the Senate of the University of Ibadan.
1963
Centre for Arabic Documentation Established
Established as an integral unit of the Institute of African Studies.
1967
Federal Funding Secured
The National Universities Commission recommended that the Federal Military Government take over the financial responsibility of the Institute.
1972
Odinani Museum Established
The Odinani Museum at Nri in Anambra State was established on March 18, 1972.
1984
Formal Opening of the Institute Museum
The museum was formally opened on September 11, 1984.
1987
WORDOC Established
The Women's Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC) was established.
2000
ICAMD Secretariat Sited
Nigeria's Secretariat of the International Centre for African Music and Dance (ICAMD) was approved.
