In the Media: ADRRC Research Coordinator Speaks on South Africa's Xenophobia and Nigerian Migrants

Dr Kudus Adebayo, Research Coordinator at the African Diaspora Resource and Research Centre (ADRRC), TETFund Centre of Excellence for Diaspora Studies, University of Ibadan, has provided expert analysis on the renewed wave of xenophobic tensions in South Africa in an interview with Legit.ng.

Speaking on the uncertainty surrounding the June 30 deadline issued by anti-immigrant groups, Dr Adebayo highlighted the heightened risks faced by Nigerians awaiting evacuation from South Africa. He stressed that prolonged delays could expose stranded migrants to greater security threats, particularly where returnees are gathered in identifiable locations.

Beyond the immediate humanitarian concerns, he called for a coordinated response by the Nigerian government involving diaspora organisations, community leaders and relevant agencies to ensure the safe evacuation of willing returnees while providing reassurance to affected families. He also argued that South African authorities must uphold their obligations under international and regional law by protecting the lives, rights and property of all residents, irrespective of nationality.
